Dirty Bones, Carnaby, London

Carnaby Street does events every now and then and we took advantage of a recent one for a cheaper (cough, bargain) dinner over at Dirty Bones. There’s three branches of Dirty Bones in Carnaby, Soho and Shoreditch. Their menu is New York style American comfort food, so it was one I had my eye on for some time. Also, I love the Carnaby Street area, it’s a nice little retreat from the crowds and tourist traps. So what did we order? We had a lot of the fried chicken, the beef short rib and truffle fries. The short rib was actually meant to have been a salad. But we were happy with our mistake order, and it was my favourite of the table. The BBQ sauce on the ribs is flavoured by salted caramel and burnt onion, so you know there’s some delectably sweet notes. The fried chicken fell a bit more flat, which was disappointing as one of the things we were most looking forward to.

As well as a hyperbole presentation, the ribs were tender and fell easily off the bone. Succulent meat is one of the missions of the kitchen and here the deliver exceptionally. The server was having his first day in the restaurant, so we reserved our feedback around the corner being incorrect, and because it was so good! There was nothing specifically amiss with the chicken (£15), it lacked a bit of fun in the flavours. Especially when compared to the many, many other chicken you can get around these parts. And especially at that price point.

Truffle fries (£5.50) was one of the sides a friend has recommended and these are yum. The cheese sauce with cheddar and parmesan is tasty and the sprinkling of truffle oil gives it that pungent goodness. Truffle oil is always an interesting one for me. I could drink the stuff but the other part of me remembers most of it is artificial.

All-in-all, fairly happy with what we’ve had at Dirty Bones. It was a chore to get a table and there’s plenty of buzz and vibe happening but some of the food was quite as successful as others. Still, experimentation is always worth in my books.
