Our first pick for our squad New Year catchup lunch was closed for the holidays, so we gave Attaboy Roy a go. There was a nice crowd and the cafe is fitted out beautifully, making for yet another buzzy place on Brunswick Street. We may have just been unfortunate with our timing/ choice of day, but the food took a very long time and the service over the experience was iffy. The cuisine itself was solid with mighty points for taste and presentation but the quantities were shy of my appetite and the wait and service is a bit discouraging for a recommendation.
The menu offering is a good one. There’s a duck burger and the brunch items all impressed with interesting components and combinations. Pizzas also looked good. We had a big group of six and perhaps that might have contributed to the delay on receiving the food items. One hour was a bit above what we would have liked and the initially tight seating arrangement wasn’t helping either. A few of the ladies went the sweet route with the Fitzroy Waffles ($16) with passionfruit, walnut crumble, pistachio ice-cream, berries and Persian ferry floss. These pleased.
My choice was for the trademark dish, also called the Attaboy ($18). This had two poached eggs, bacon, avocado, mushroom, crumbled hazelnut and walnut, beetroot bernaise and potato rosti. It was a towering beast, and one worth conquering. It’s a little awkward to eat but all the layers are nicely done and the beetroot bernaise is an interesting complement to the salty flavours. As mentioned I left with a little bit of hunger, I think a slice of bread in here would have finished it off nicely.
A few of the group also went for another very enticing choice – Pope Benedict ($17). That’s with a huge square of roasted pork belly and hash brown served with poached egg and hollandaise. It’s a heavy, decadent affair and the guys enjoyed it nicely. So overall we thought well of the food but the service was a bit lacking, with cutlery had food bits still on it and staff seeming rather disorganised with the orders.
