I got my vegetarian fix last week at the socially conscious Friends of the Earth Cafe on Smith Street of Collingwood. It has a zippy, happy hippy ambiance that makes for a great spot to chill away from the crowds. Food quality of the fully vegetarian, vegan and gluten free fare is top notch though you may need a large plate if you’ve got a gluttonous appetite like myself. It’s a healthy lucky dip here at Friends of the Earth if you go for their mix plate, with a constantly rotating and seasonal set of goodness on your plate. It’s an easy $10 for a small plate and $12.50 for the large plate.
The staff are full of life and sunny and the dishes are prepared to order which is a boon for a venue like this. On my morning the plate consisted of long grain brown rice with kalamata olives, spring vegetables with crumbed tempeh, asparagus, pumpkin, carrot, lentils with pickled and onion and a beet salad with rocket slaw and leafy greens. That’s a lot of variety on a plate! It’s like a food court smorgasbord minus the regret. I enjoyed all the healthiness on the plate with the spring vegetables being the best part and I probably could have done with slightly less of the grains. Well seasoned, everything was fresh and felt guilt free. I’m going for the large next time, I can scoff this all down very easily. Great spot.
