Hidden away in the alleyways of Chinatown is a wee little drinking spot called Berlin Bar, one I’ve got grown quite fond of with a happening menu and a usually solid vibe. I’ve never had trouble getting a table and it’s a nice place to sit for a while and have banter with friends without blaring music in the background. The bar itself is split-themed with a posh East and a more grunge West. Take your pick. There’s a very nice upper level table on the East side, but the West usually is better for a bigger group. Menu’s the same all round.
Cocktails are a flat $20 a pop and probably the most strikingly thematic thing beyond the Euro beer range. I went with Die Ziege, described as a scotch with honey liquer with a sesame seed rim and served with a honey and goat cheese cream side. I was more into the cheese than anything else, wasn’t my favourite combo. Service was mixed, though on Friday and Saturday nights there’s a roaming magician who’s good for a quick laugh.
My counterpart went with the In Dem Garten, of Cachaca, lime, beetroot, egg white, sugar, and rosemary. We quite like this combo, rosemary was a bit on the subtle/ non-existent side. Other cocktails I’ve had have been fair. Worth checking out for at least one drink to soak in the theme.
