Mail Exchange Hotel, Melbourne

The Mail Exchange Hotel has a great location near Southern Cross and was also a spacious and relaxed venue, making it the perfect stop for a goodbye meal with one of my best friends here. Corner of Spencer and Bourke is one of my favourite intersections and there’s plenty of room to flop out with your luggage as well.

Menu is classic pub and that and the decor could do with some slight updating to more modern times. There’s two menus by the way, the bistro has a few more options and wasn’t till a little later on that we were told this. We ordered the chicken and quinoa salad ($25) which had chicken, spinach, quinoa, roasted capsicum, pumpkin, pine nuts, goat cheese in a lemon and mustard dressing. Pricing aside, it was a good salad, served satisfyingly warm but could have done with more chicken. Pine nuts and pumpkin were good additions.

The second food choice was the chicken burger option ($23.5), served with a generous helping of caramelised onion and a side of “bad boy” fries. The fries were beer battered generic, could have been badder. Burger was surprisingly good, a hearty filling and no reliance on fry-ness with the grilled chicken still being flavoursome. Price remains a little steep for what you get and the bottom bun suffered from meat sweat.

Slightly average pub cuisine, but a handy address and probably good for sports and crowds, so not to be counted out completely.

6.5/10
